I gave this presentation at the Salt Lake City Google Cloud Platform Meetup we hosted at Deseret Digital Media.

https://speakerdeck.com/justincarmony/ddms-journey-into-big-data-with-bigquery-with-ksl-and-deseret-news

We will hear from Justin Carmony, the Sr. Director of Engineering, Analytics at Deseret Digital Media.

This talk is part use-case and part intro into BigQuery.

Three years ago Deseret Digital Media had a serious problem: it had a lot of data in Google Analytics and Google Ad Manager (then called DFP), but couldn’t run the in-depth analysis needed because of limitations with their reporting tools. They had crucial questions they couldn’t answer, so they did what everyone else was doing: just guessing and hoping for the best.

Talk: Making the Switch to Engineering Management - Utah PHP Usergroup

I gave this talk at the Utah PHP Usergroup. It was a quick turn around to make the presentation, so not my best slides, but they got the job done.

Slides

https://speakerdeck.com/justincarmony/making-the-switch-to-engineering-management

Video

Note: the quality isn’t the best, but it’s what they had.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyuAWOfR6Ek

Details

Making the Switch to Engineering Management by Justin Carmony

The first part of an engineer’s career is pretty straight-forward: learning the skills and technology to code. Then, one day after being a senior developer for a few years, you find you need to make a decision: do you want to become a manager? Are you ready to make the switch to management? Do you even want to? What would it be like? How do you know if you’re ready? How do you prepare? Ahhhhh!

Slides

I don’t have a copy of the slides for this presentation. However, they were near identical to the presentation I gave at the Google Cloud Platform SLC meetup. My daughter was only a few weeks old, so my whole family was operating on very little sleep, and I forgot my power cord for my brand new MacBook Pro. Won’t make that mistake again.

Here was a tweet after the Meetup:

This presentation was a ton of fun. In a room with a dozen or more engineers and did a live demo of using Docker. We made environments for local development and then showed how to use them in production. We talked about our experience at DDM running Docker in production, where it made sense, and tradeoffs to be aware of.

I had the absolute privilege of flying out to Manchester, England to give this presentation. It was a total blast.

Video

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTcyuzJkxIg

Slides

https://speakerdeck.com/justincarmony/scaling-and-managing-asynchronous-workers-and-staying-sane

Abstract

There comes a point in time with a website when eventually need to do something in the background. There are always cron jobs, but eventually those either don’t scale well, or are not responsive enough. Learn about how to help your website efficiently scale by using workers. We’ll touch briefly the fundamental theory behind workers and how to easily implement them. We’ll learn about several different technologies to help manage workers such as Beanstalkd, Supervisord, Redis, and others. We’ll show a live demo of PHP workers performing tasks and you’ll leave with sound understanding of how to implement workers in your own application.

Wow, this talk. I had warned myself when I started speaking I would never, ever be one of those speakers who came ill-prepared and bombed a talk. It took being ~30 talks in my speaking career where I let my guard down, and at one of my very favorite conferences, I blew it. (Ok, maybe not bombed it, but I didn’t do well to my standards)

Ok, I didn’t totally blow it, but if you watch the video (I was almost tempted not to post it) feel free to skip the live demo. What happened is my first part of my talk went incredibly fast, and then I ran into technical difficulties with my live demo (which I didn’t prepare or harden very well in advance). What was the worst part is because I took so long trying to get my live demo to work, I had well-prepared content I had to rush.

This talk has a special place in my heart. It was the first talk I ever gave at a larger conference. The conference paid for my hotel and airfare, and I gave the presentation in front of over a hundred people. At the time, it was my personal goal to present at PHP Tek, and I had finally achieved it.

Slides

https://www.slideshare.net/JustinCarmony/blazing-data-with-redis-20

Alright, it looks like the Victor at UPHPU has gotten my presentation up on Steamlining your web development. Since it was the first night Victor had tried to capture video & audio to mesh them together, the video on the presentation is a little bit further ahead than the audio. However, I think the presentation went quite well. You can view all the UPHPU meeting videos here. Here is the presentation I gave:
